Golf Introduction
In Puerto Rico the game of golf dates back to the 1930's, when the first
course was constructed on plantation ground to entertain elite business
associates. Appeal for the sport grow steadily, and courses began to appear
throughout the Island to compliment vacation resorts, and to serve as a
recreational pastime at two U.S. military bases.
Today Puerto Rico has become the golf mecca of the Caribbean. Throughout our
island you'll find 18 complete golf courses, including four 9-hole layouts and
fourteen 18-hole layouts. Sixteen of these golf courses are open to the public,
and, 10 have some restrictions. Two courses, the Bamboo Creek Golf Course at
Roosevelt Roads Naval Base and the Fort Buchanan Golf Club in Guaynabo, are
restricted to military personnel and their guests.
Several factors make Puerto Rico the perfect place for golf. For one, there's great weather
here year-round. Cool trade winds make for a refreshing golf
experience, and plenty of rain keeps the grass green and healthy. The
characteristics of the land also enhances the beauty of the game. The
diverse terrain affords an opportunity for designers to contour acres of
rolling meadows along side oceans, rivers and mountainous rain-forests. The
outlying scenery becomes the backdrops that inescapably charms any golfer. Most
of these courses were designed by some of the most famous names in golf,
including Arthur Hills, Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, Rees Jones, and Robert
Trent Jones, Sr., & son. Included in this lot is our very own golf expert
Chi Chi Rodriguez. In addition, many of our golf courses are part of prominent resort
hotels, that pamper their golf enthusiast guests beyond expectations.
